Installation: Install Sona Using Google Tag Manager

Updated this week

When to Use This / Prerequisites

Use this guide if:

  • You prefer not to modify the HTML of your site directly

  • Your website is already set up with Google Tag Manager

Prerequisites:

  • A Google Tag Manager account

  • Access to the container for your website

  • Your unique Sona tracking script (available on the Tracking Pixel page)

Note: Ad blockers may interfere with scripts installed through GTM. For the most reliable tracking, installing directly in the site's HTML is recommended.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open Google Tag Manager

  • Log in to your GTM account.

  • Select the container for the site where you want to install the Sona script.

Step 2: Create a New Tag

  • In the left-hand menu, click Tags, then click New.

  • Enter a name like Sona Tracking Pixel.

Step 3: Configure the Tag

  • Click the Tag Configuration area (pencil icon).

Step 4: Choose tag type

  • In the "Choose tag type" search box, type “html” and select Custom HTML.

Step 5: Add Your Sona Script

  • Copy your Sona tracking script from the Tracking Pixel page.

  • Paste it into the HTML field.

Step 6: Set the Trigger

  • Click Triggering, then select All Pages to fire the tag on every page.

Step 7: Save and Publish

  • Click Save. You’ll see the tag added to your tag list.

Step 8: Submit

  • Click Submit in the top right to publish your changes.

Key Concepts / Best Practices

  • Custom HTML Tags: GTM’s flexibility lets you install third-party scripts like Sona’s pixel without needing developer support.

  • Page-Level Tracking: Setting the trigger to “All Pages” ensures full site tracking coverage.

  • Ad Blocker Awareness: Some users may not be tracked if they use privacy tools that block GTM.
